Natural Swimming Pool

take a dip in our Wild swimming pond

Our natural pool creates a living, breathing, bathing space, free of chlorine and other nasty chemicals, which also supports a huge range of species that call Moat Island their home.

Guests can use the wild swimming pond when staying, and at certain times of year, we welcome members of the public to book swimming sessions.

Be the first to hear about Swimming Pond news:

What is a natural swimming pool?

Natural pools aim to use plants and microorganisms to clean the water for us instead of using chemicals, which makes you feel connected to the space around you, as well as feeling refreshed and invigorated.

“in a natural pool without algae I feel uncomfortable for there must be some poison in the water” – Andreas Graber

Outdoor Swimming sessions

During our quieter season we may offer midweek swimming sessions. Sessions are private to your group, so you have full use of the site’s facilities; heated shower and toilet block and outdoor kitchen for tea and coffee after your swim.  There must be a minimum of  2 people and maximum of 6 people for safety reasons. At the moment, public swimming slots are closed, but please keep an eye out for September slots.

Please note, if you are staying with us, you do not need to book to use the swimming pond.

Moat Island Swimming Pond Rules

Although we want you to feel the freedom a swimming pond brings, please be aware of the following rules. This allows us to keep the pond open all year round and safe for everybody to use. Please note, in extreme conditions, the balance of the pond may be disrupted, making swimming unadvised or impossible.

There is no lifeguard on duty. Use the pond at your own risk. A member of staff may not be on site at all times.

You are responsible for ensuring that all members of your party/family/group are made fully aware of and adhere to the rules before using the pool and surrounding area. Anyone not following these rules will be asked to leave the pond area immediately.

Repeated or serious breaches may result in removal from the site.

  • Children and non-competent swimmers must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
  • No lone swimming allowed. All swimmers must be observed by an adult on the deck at all times. If alone, please contact us in advance to arrange a member of staff to supervise whilst you swim.
  • No swimming at night.
  • No swimming after dark or in poor visibility conditions (fog, heavy rain, etc.).
  • No diving, running, or pushing – the pond depth and terrain is uneven.
  • No alcohol or drugs before or during swimming.
  • Use the emergency horn located by the pool to raise an alert if someone is in trouble.
  • In an emergency, call 999 immediately. A member of staff may not be on site at all times.
  • Respect wildlife and the natural environment – do not disturb plants or animals. The plants are an important part of the filtration system. (NO wading in shallows)
  • Please do not bring glass or any other items into the pond area.
  • Maximum of 6 people in the pond at one time.
  • Please shower before and after you swim.

1.6 – 2 metres deep – no shallow end

Millions of living things call the pond their home. Not all of these will be kind to human skin, therefore it’s important to towel off vigourously and shower after going in. This is especially true in increasingly hot summer months. High water temperature (23C +) creates an evironment that parasites thrive in.
